My thoughts on ‘The Return of the Butterfly’ by Moni Mohsin

Do not be fooled by the heels on the cover or the seemingly illiterate, housewife narrator: this is a serious story about politics. Moni Mohsin’s writing is full of translated Urdu expressions, Urdu phrases written in transliteration, and such a beautiful Pakistani butchering of the English language, that I am in awe.

I blamed my age. I turn 29 soon, and I told myself that the country-hopping and digital-nomading had run its course. I wanted to settle, dammit, a word I had scorned all my life. And I wanted it now, with my airfryer, and I wanted no arguments. Because I said so. I don't have children, but I had turned into an Amma.

The Reverie Publishers Panel in Ananke’s Lit Fest

A few days ago I saw some of my favorite authors in one frame, and I thought, hey. I want to listen to this. It was the Reverie Publishers panel refereed by Safinah Danish Elahi in the Ananke Women’s Literary Festival, Day 2, today. She talked to Moni Mohsin, Osman Haneef and Zain Saeed for 50 minutes. Here are my favorite parts from it.

Leaving

Leaving is heart wrenching, but then I suppose this is the price we pay for opening our hearts. For falling headfirst, no landing plan, no safety gear. For allowing ourselves to be consumed. For loving.
